Formula E sounds different, not silent, but sharply alive. As the cars accelerate, a rising electric whine replaces the traditional roar, signalling a shift in what motorsport can be. Now in its 12th season, the championship has reached a new level of scale and competitiveness. With 17 races across major cities worldwide, from São Paulo and Mexico City to Monaco, Shanghai, and London, the calendar is its most ambitious yet.
The racing itself reflects that growth, with five different winners in the opening five rounds, highlighting a field where outcomes feel earned rather than engineered.
At the core of Formula E’s appeal is how electric performance reshapes racing. Unlike combustion engines, electric motors deliver instant torque, creating sharper acceleration and more responsive driving. This is especially effective on tight, technical street circuits, where close-quarters battles and overtaking are more frequent.
Strategy adds another layer. “Attack Mode” requires drivers to leave the racing line to gain a temporary power boost, forcing split-second decisions between track position and outright pace. Meanwhile, energy management remains central, as every braking zone becomes an opportunity to recover power, turning efficiency into a competitive advantage over the course of a race.
The championship’s design extends beyond the track. By racing in city centres and grouping events geographically, Formula E reduces its logistical footprint while bringing the sport directly to urban audiences. Sustainability is not just a theme, but an operational principle embedded in how the series runs.
Off the circuit, the sport is also evolving. In March 2026, all 20 drivers jointly addressed the FIA over concerns around stewarding consistency, a rare and notable show of unity that reflects both the stakes and the maturity of the championship.
Looking forward, the next major step is the GEN4 car, arriving in the 2026–27 season. It promises significantly more power, permanent all-wheel drive, a larger battery, and greater energy regeneration. With major manufacturers such as Porsche, Nissan, Jaguar, and Stellantis involved, Formula E continues to serve as a high-speed testing ground for innovations that will soon influence everyday road cars.
Formula E may be quieter than traditional racing, but its impact is anything but, pushing technology, competition, and the future of motorsport forward at full speed.
